Serie A has enjoyed a resurgence across recent years with two of the three finals of the major European competitions last season featuring sides from Italy’s top-flight. Atalanta shocked Bayer Leverkusen to win the Europa League while Fiorentina dramatically lost to Olympiakos in the Conference League.
Remarkably, nine Italian teams will enter European competition next season and several exciting young talents will be aiming to showcase their ability. Unlike Ligue 1 and La Liga, Serie A hasn’t been renowned from producing homegrown talent with Sandro Tonali the only Italian to depart the league for over €50m across the last 20 years. But there’s a number of exciting Serie A talents generating interest from top European clubs and we’ve analysed the most valuable under-21 talent after the latest Transfermarkt market value update.
The top ten most valuable U21 players in Serie A
1. Giorgio Scalvini – Atalanta – 20 years old – €45m
Scalvini has forged his reputation as one of the most talented young centre-backs in the world and he ranks as the 13th most valuable player in Serie A. The Italian international enjoyed another excellent season for Atalanta making 44 appearances as they won their first ever European trophy. Scalvini, however, sustained an injury in the final league game of the season and he will miss Euro 2024 but he will still be on the radars of top European clubs this summer.
2. Kenan Yildiz – Juventus – 19 years old – €30m
In yet another disappointing season for Juventus, Yildiz provided optimism for the future. The 19-year-old provided eight goal contributions as he cemented his role as a first team player. Yildiz will be vital for the rebuild under incoming new boss Thiago Motta and he will have the chance to shine for Turkey at Euro 2024.
3. Michael Kayode – Fiorentina – 19 years old – €25m
Kayode enjoyed a €10m upgrade in the latest Serie A market value update after a stunning breakthrough season for Fiorentina. The former Juventus academy graduate was one of the best young right-backs in Europe as he made 37 appearances. Kayode didn’t feature in the latter rounds of the Conference League as Fiorentina reached the final but he possesses incredible potential.
4. Matías Soulé – Frosinone (on loan from Juventus) – 20 years old – €25m
Soulé is one of four players contracted to Juventus on this top ten list and he’s arguably the most talented. The Argentinian winger spent the season on loan at Frosinone and he scored 11 goals in 36 appearances. Crystal Palace are pushing hard to sign Soulé this summer but they face competition from a number of clubs, including Aston Villa.
5. Yunus Musah – AC Milan – 21 years old – €22m
Musah’s market value dropped by €1m in the latest update after an inconsistent season with AC Milan. The midfielder has already amassed 35 caps for the USA at just 21-years-old but he’ still not a certified starter at the San Siro club. AC spent €20m to sign him from Valencia last summer and he’s still viewed as a potential star of the future.
6. Matteo Ruggeri – 21 years old – €20m
Ruggeri emerged as a key player for Atalanta last season, playing a key role in the 3-0 win over Leverkusen in the Europa League final. Atalanta are the best run club in Italy and they’ve enjoyed great success from selling their best talents. Ruggeri is often an unsung hero at Atalanta but he justifiably received a €5m upgrade and he can consider himself unlucky to miss out on Italy’s squad for Euro 2024.
7. Valentín Carboni – Monza (on loan from Inter) – 19 years old – €15m
Carboni will return to Inter this summer hoping to break into their first team after an encouraging campaign with Monza. The 19-year-old was predominately used from the bench but he made 31 appearances in Serie A and he recently made his Argentina debut.
8. Fabio Miretti – Juventus – 20 years old – €15m
Miretti enjoyed another good season with Juventus and he’s already played 75 times for the Italian giants at 20 years old. The central midfielder has stepped up in Paul Pogba’s absence and he will likely have an even more important role next season withAdrian Rabiot set to depart.
9. Samuel Iling-Junior – Juventus – 20 years old – €15m
The English-born starlet is finding his feet in Serie A and he featured regularly from the bench last season. Iling-Junior made 24 appearances in the league and the former Chelsea academy kid will be aiming to establish himself as a first-team regular next season.
10. Tommaso Baldanzi – Roma – 20 years old – €15m
Baldanzi was recalled by Roma in January after a successful loan spell at Empoli. The attacking midfielder was used regularly by Daniel de Rossi in a clear indication that he features heavily in the Roma head coach’s plans for next season.
