The 2023/34 club season came to a conclusion earlier in June with Real Madrid being crowned kings of Europe for the 15th time after beating Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final. It was another thrilling campaign across the world with Bayer Leverkusen ending Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga dominance, arguably, the biggest story in Europe.
Several players enjoyed stunning breakthrough seasons with Lamine Yamal confirming his status as a generational talent at Barcelona and Cole Palmer contributing 33 goal contributions for Chelsea in 34 league games. Both featured high on our list of the players with the biggest increases in market value across the 2023/24 season but which players moved in the opposite direction. Transfermarkt’s end of season market value updates across all leagues landed recently and we’ve analysed which players dropped most in value across last season.
Which players dropped most in market value across the 2023/24 season?
Antony and Randal Kolo Muani share top spot after both attackers had a €35 million drop in market value across last season. Kolo Muani endured a difficult maiden season at PSG after completing an eye-watering €95m move from Frankfurt. The French international’s market value was €80m when he moved to Paris but it dropped to €45m after scoring just 12 goals in 44 appearances for the Ligue 1 champions.
Antony suffered another dismal campaign at Manchester United and his signing typifies the club’s terrible recruitment across the last decade. The Brazilian international joined United for €95m in August 2022 when his market value was just €35m at Ajax. Antony’s market value rose to reflect United’s outlay but it stood at €60m at the start of last season and it’s now dropped by €35m to €25m. Wesley Fofana and Neymar’s market values both dropped by €30m due to their injury woes. Fofana failed to make a single appearance for Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettinho, while Neymar played just five times for Al-Hilal before suffering a serious injury. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg’s valuation dropped by a massive €27m as he was predominantly restricted to a substitute role at Tottenham. Four players – Mason Mount, Reece James, Joshua Kimmich and João Cancelo – all had €25m downgrades, while Marco Verratti ranks 10th after a €22m downgrade following his move to Qatar.
