Under the now departed Jürgen Klopp one of the biggest measures of his success was his Liverpool team consistently competing with Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City without spending anywhere near the same amount of money. However, through some big sales of their own, such as the €135m deal which saw Philippe Coutinho depart to Barcelona in 2018, Liverpool have made some big investments to their squad in recent years. And went they’ve spent big, they’ve had a pretty good hit rate of successful transfers. Nobody could argue the €84.65m deal for Virgil van Dijk wasn’t an utter success.
However, there have been a few high profile signings that haven’t quite worked out – whilst the jury is still out for many, some could place club record €85m signing Darwin Núñez into that category. Nevertheless, some other clubs have begun profiting from Liverpool starting to splash the cash for their stars in recent years. But which clubs have the Reds paid the most money to in transfer fees in the last 20 years since the 2004/05 season? Here at Transfermarkt, we have you covered. Four Premier League sides crop up in the top 10.
The clubs Liverpool have paid the most money to in transfer fees
Coming in at first place is Southampton, whom Liverpool have paid as much as €215.9m in transfer fees to in the last 20 seasons. There was even a time where the Reds were referred to as ‘Liverhampton’. That figure is the accumulated fee of seven separate deals – the most expensive of which were the €84.7m signing of van Dijk in 2018, the €41.2m signing of Sadio Mané in 2016, and the €31m acquisition of Adam Lallana in 2014. In second place is German outfit RB Leipzig, who have made €170m from Liverpool for three deals – Dominik Szoboszlai for €70m last summer, Naby Keïta for €60m in 2018, and Ibrahima Konaté for €40m in 2021.
In third place is Italian side Roma, who have made €137.9m from selling as many as five players to Liverpool, including the sale of goalkeeper Alisson for €60m in 2018 and Mohamed Salah for just €35m the summer before that. They are followed in fourth by Benfica, who have sold two players to the Reds in the last two decades for a combined fee of €110m, including Liverpool’s record €85m transfer for striker Núñez. In fifth place come Newcastle with a total of €76.5m from selling three players. Then it’s Aston Villa with a total of €69.3m from selling just two players.
In seventh are Porto with €63m made from selling two players to Liverpool. They are followed by Bayern Munich in eighth, with the Bavarian giants having sold two players to the Reds for a combined fee of €62m. Monaco take ninth place on the list, after selling one player (Fabinho) for a total of €45m. Completing the top 10 are Wolves, who have made €44.7m from the Merseyside club from the Diogo Jota sale alone.
