Tottenham Hotspur announced the shock signing of Burnley winger Wilson Odobert this morning. It’s understood that Spurs will pay an initial fee of €29.4 million with potentially €5.9m in add-ons to bring the French winger to North London. The 19-year-old has penned a deal until 2029 and it continues Tottenham’s transfer strategy of signing young talents this summer. Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Min-hyeok Yang – all 18 years old – have joined Ange Postecoglou’s men this summer with Odobert representing their fourth teenage addition.
Spurs have actively targeted younger talents as they look to build for the future and to bring down the average age of their squad. Transfers are increasingly protracted affairs but Odobert’s arrival came out of the blue with little social media commentary on the deal – Postecoglou regularly conducted deals privately during his spell at Celtic. Odobert joined Burnley last summer and became their youngest ever Premier League goalscorer after netting against Chelsea in October and he possesses huge potential.
Why have Tottenham signed Wilson Odobert?
As mentioned previously, Odobert fits Tottenham’s transfer strategy and they’ll be hoping he delivers on his potential to develop into a top class player. Odobert is capable of playing on either wing and he combines excellent pace with good technical skills. He played 29 Premier League games for Burnley last season and his return of three goals and three assists was quite impressive given Vincent Kompany’s side’s struggles and eventual relegation.
Odobert has played for France throughout the youth levels, including for the U21, and he played 32 games for Troyes in Ligue 1 before earning a move to Burnley. It represents a smart signing for Spurs due to Odobert’s high potential and he will be expected to compete for first-team minutes with Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski, Manor Solomon and Timo Werner.
