Whilst having young energetic players is often key to a team’s success, obtaining experienced heads can be equally as important. Some players can be accused of starting to ‘lose their legs’ as their powers fade with age. For some others, they seem to age like a fine wine. But which players going into their twilight years have been on the move this summer? Here at Transfermarkt, we have calculated the most valuable players aged 30 or older to switch clubs this transfer window.
The most valuable players aged 30+ to move clubs this summer
The most valuable player in his 30’s to move clubs is Piotr Zieliński, who moved from Napoli to Inter Milan this summer. He moved on a free transfer but has a current market value of €22 million. In second place is West Ham new boy Guido Rodríguez, who moved from Real Betis to East London on a free transfer, but has a market value of €20m. Third place goes to Raphaël Varane, who left Manchester United and moved to Serie A side Como 1907 on a free transfer. He also has a market value of €20m. In fourth is Álvaro Morata, who went from Atlético Madrid to AC Milan in a €13m move, and has a market value of €16m. Niclas Füllkrug completes the top five, after moving from Borussia Dortmund to West Ham for €27m – he has a €15m market value.
In sixth is Îlkay Gündogan, who sensationally returned back to Manchester City on a free transfer from Barcelona just one year after leaving just a year ago. He has a current market value of €15m. Rafa takes sixth, having moved from Benfica to Besiktas on a free transfer and boasting a €14m market value. Álex Moreno is seventh, after going on loan from Aston Villa to Nottingham Forest and having a market value of €13m. Completing the top 10 are Eric Dier and Jonathan Clauss with market values of €12m. Dier went from Tottenham to Bayern Munich on a free, while Clauss left Marseille to sign for nice for €5m.
