Morgan Rogers has undisputedly been of the emerging stars of the Premier League season with the Aston Villa star in contention for his maiden senior England call-up. Unai Emery transformed Villa’s fortunes in his first full season at the Midlands club by leading them to the Champions League for the first time since the competitions reformat in 1992.
Villa have started impressively in the league and sit just two points off leaders Liverpool ahead of hosting Manchester United on Sunday. The realisation of returning to European football’s most prestigious club competition hit home when Bayern Munich rocked up last night as Villa recorded a famous win. On the biggest stage against a European giant, Rogers didn’t look out of place against world-class opposition as he continued to showcase his incredible talent.
Aston Villa’s best player? Moran Rogers’ excellent start to the season
It’s been a whirlwind eight months for Rodgers with the attacking midfielder only joining Aston Villa in February. The 22-year-old impressed for Middlesborough against Villa in the FA Cup earlier that month and it was enough to convince their sporting director Monchi to sanction an initial €9.4 million transfer fee. After joining Villa, Rogers featured fleetingly and contributed four goals across 16 appearances but his potential was crystal clear. Rogers, however, has been integral to Emery’s plans this season and he’s started all eight games, scoring once and providing two assists.
Attacking players are increasingly judged on their numbers but while Rogers’ don’t immediately stand out, anybody watching Villa’s games can tell that he’s been one of their star performers. He’s been deployed in support of Ollie Watkins with the licence to drift into pockets space and his ability to collect the ball between the lines is one of his strengths. Rogers has attempted the 11th most dribbles in the Premier League season and he possesses the ability to glide past defenders. Adding more goals and assists to his game will be a target but Rogers provides so much to Villa’s attacking unit hence Emery’s trust in him.
Morgan Rogers’ market value rise
Transfermakt’s intermediary Premier League market value update landed on Tuesday and Rogers landed a substantial upgrade of €7m. The England U21 international was rewarded for his excellent form and his value soared to €22m. Rogers only rose to Villa’s 14th most valuable player but his market value will undoubtedly increase again in the next full update if he continues to perform to reflect his importance to Villa.
As the graphic above illustrates, Rogers’ market value has soared by more than €20m across the last twelve months. After leaving Manchester City permanently for Middlesborough last summer, Rogers’ market value stood at just €1.8m in October. But it rose to €2.8m across his spell at the Championship club and it’s been on an upward trajectory since, moving to €8m in March and €15m in May before landing at his current valuation of €22m.
Does Morgan Rogers deserve an England call-up?
Rogers has been a regular throughout youth levels for England and his promise from an early age was highlighted by making his senior debut for West Brom at just 16. Manchester City pounced to secure his services but he had to leave in search of regular first-team football like his close friend Cole Palmer. Rogers has made a strong case to be included in Lee Carsley’s England squad, which is announced on Friday.
Carsley worked with Rogers with the U21s but Villa boss Unai Emery was unhappy that he remained at level during the last international break. Emery said: “What is a player like Morgan Rogers gaining by playing for the U21s? I am surprised. I respect that they are not calling him for the first team, but the second team? He is not a player for the second team. If they had called him for the senior team, I could understand it. Morgan Rogers is a reality now and he is confirming it – not to play for the U21s.” Rogers is undoubtedly a star of the future but his stunning form this season is earning the plaudits that he deserves.
