Chelsea interested

Clubs across England and the continent were alerted to the news on Monday that Brighton will allow Evan Ferguson to leave on-loan in January. The Telegraph broke the story that the 20-year-old will depart the Seagulls on a temporary basis in order to gain first-team football. Ferguson has been starved of minutes this season under Fabian Hürzeler with Danny Welbeck, João Pedro and Georgino Rutter all above him in the pecking order. The Ireland international has only started one Premier League this season and he’s determined to play after returning to full fitness.
Ferguson emerged as one of the brightest young strikers in Europe during the 2022/23 season and became only the fourth 18-year-old to score a hat-trick in the Premier League, achieving that feat against Newcastle. Injuries, however, have stunted his development but Brighton will not sanction a permanent sale due to his potential and he signed a long-term contract last November. But Ferguson’s availability on-loan in January will spark a battle for his signature with a plethora of clubs interested and we’ve examined five potential Premier League destinations.

Five potential Premier League loan destinations for Evan Ferguson
West Ham United
It’s understood that Brighton’s preference is for Ferguson to remain in the Premier League and West Ham seems a perfect destination. The Hammers have badly needed a quality striker for years and the decision to sign Niclas Füllkrug last summer hasn’t worked out. There’s been speculation that the German international could even leave in January and Michail Antonio is a fading force at 34 with just one goal in 12 Premier League games this season. Danny Ings isn’t good enough to start for West Ham and Ferguson could spearhead their attack as they aim to prosper after a disappointing start under Julian Lopategui.
Fulham
Fulham have enjoyed a good start under Marco Silva and their impressive performances have slipped under the radar. But they can definitely improve their options up front and Craven Cottage would provide an excellent destination for Ferguson to receive regular minutes. Raul Jimenez is their first-choice number 9 with four league goals in 12 games but the Mexican is now 33. Rodrigo Muniz enjoyed a purple patch last season but the Brazilian has failed to replicate that form and their lack of a quality striker was evident in their 4-1 defeat to Wolves last weekend.

Everton
The Toffees are the joint-second lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with ten goals, so their need for attacking reinforcements is obvious. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has managed to avoid injury this season and he’s started every Premier League game but he’s only scored twice, with his last goal arriving in September. In fairness to Calvert-Lewin, Everton also rank joint-second bottom for most big chances created in the Premier League with 17 – according to Opta – but Ferguson would bolster their attacking options and would also allow Sean Dyche to switch to a traditional 4-4-2.
Leicester City
Leicester City have four strikers on their books but they remain over-reliant on Jamie Vardy for goals. Vardy and Jordan Ayew have both scored four goals this season but Ferguson would represent a significant upgrade on both players well into their thirties. Patson Daka has missed the majority of the campaign through injury but he’s not a proven goalscorer and Leicester could offer Ferguson guaranteed minutes. Crystal Palace are in a similar predicament but a move to Selhurst Park is highly unlikely due to the rivalry between the two clubs.
Chelsea
The Stamford Bridge side retain a long-term interest in Ferguson and there’s been speculation they could make a move in January. A move to Chelsea remains unlikely for several factors but Ferguson could provide back-up to Nicolas Jackson with Christopher Nkunku’s future up in the air. Nkunku isn’t happy with his gametime and could depart in January and Ferguson would be an attractive replacement on an initial loan deal. Chelsea are overwhelming favourites to win the Europa Conference League so Feguson could feasibly receive considerable gametime but Brighton have lost a number of players and staff to the Blues recently.
