With almost half the season played, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 580 Serie A players. Despite a downgrade, Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martínez remains the most valuable player in Italy. While league leaders Atalanta and surprise team Fiorentina were able to increase their market values significantly, the likes of Roma and AC Milan, who mostly disappointed, saw their squad values drop—even if the Rossoneri had the player with the most significant upgrade.

Serie A: All new market values at a glance

After a plus of €20m to now €50m, Tijjani Reijnders is the biggest update winner. Together with Christian Pulisic (unchanged) and Theo Hernández, the Dutchman is now the second most valuable player at AC Milan behind Rafael Leão (€75m). Hernández, in the meantime, saw his market value drop by €10m to €50m. “While Milan have disappointed in Serie A, where they are eighth, they have played well in the Champions League,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Italy Jatin Dietl said. Reijnders is one of the main reasons for their success in the Champions League where he has been more consistent. The Dutchman has managed seven goals across all competitions; only Pulisic, eight goals, has been more successful. “Reijnders is a hot topic internationally and has already been linked with a move to Real Madrid. If he continues his performances, then he will be a hot commodity on the market next summer.”

At city rivals Inter Milan, top goalscorer Marcus Thuram and wing-back Federico Dimarco stand out with upgrades of €10m each to €75m and €60m, respectively. It is the fifth upgrade in a row for the French winger since he joined on a free transfer from Borussia Mönchengladbach in the summer of 2023; his market value has increased by €43m since. The Frenchman has surpassed Martínez as Inter’s top goalscorer. The Argentine has struggled since the Copa América scoring just six goals in 18 games across all competitions. Martínez dropped by €10m to now €100m but remains the most valuable Serie A player by some distance.

Serie A market values: Atalanta and Lazio the biggest winners

While Roma (-€45m to €287.5m) and Milan (-€29m to €533m) drop significantly in squad value, Atalanta and Lazio have seen their squad values rise dramatically. “Atalanta have won ten games in a row in the Serie A and only lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League (2-3),” Dietl said. “Despite winning the Europa League and losing top star Teun Koopmeiners, the club appears to have reached yet another level and is now a candidate to win the Scudetto. The primary reason for the club’s success are players in high demand on the transfer market. Stars like Ademola Lookman, Éderson, Isak Hien, and summer signing Mateo Retegui have seen their market value increase.”

Lookman once again stood out. The 27-year-old Englishman, who now represents Nigeria, saw his market value improve by 37.5% from €40m to now €55m. “Lookman crowned his outstanding 2024 with the African Ballon d’Or on Monday, and rightly so, the 27-year-old has been in top form for months and is the protagonist of Atalanta’s current lead in the table and has also led his club to its first international title in history with the three goals against Leverkusen,” Dietl said. “Lookmans impresses above all with his goal-scoring instinct, his dribbling, his power and his ability to always be on top form in important games. According to media reports, PSG, Arsenal and Liverpool were already interested last summer and it will be very difficult for Atalanta to persuade him to stay next summer. Overall, Atalanta see their squad value improve by €39.5m to €487m, and Lookman with a market value increase, is the second biggest winner of the update behind Reijnders.

Behind them is Juventus’ Francisco Conceição, who, after an initial loan from Porto, was signed on a permanent deal and saw his market value increase by €14m to €36m. Elsewhere, forward Moise Kean (+€12m to €30m) and talented defender Pietro Comuzzo (+€11m to €15m) are responsible for Fiorentina’s rise in squad value by €21m to €263m. Only Atalanta and Lazio, who have been excellent in the Serie A and the Europa League, have seen a bigger increase in squad value. At Lazio, Mattéo Guendouzi (+€7m to €32m), his midfield partner Nicolò Rovella (+€7m to €25m), defender Mario Gila (+€10m to €28m) and Nuno Tavares (+€10m to €25m) the big winners. “The Portuguese wing-back is one of the steals of the summer,” Dietl said. “He arrived via a loan from Arsenal and his obligation to buy is just €5m—after three consecutive loans, Arsenal want to sell him permanently. He has been a big success at Lazio and assisted eight goals in his first ten games. Only a suspension and an upper thigh injury prevented a bigger upgrade this time.”

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
