With the end of the year approaching fast, Transfermarkt continues to update the market values of Europe’s top leagues. Next on the list is the Liga Portugal, with 413 market value updates. Once again, Sporting’s Swedish top striker Viktor Gyökeres, the most valuable player in the league, saw his market value increase. But while he remains at the top, two other players, teammate Morten Hjulmand and Porto’s Samu Aghehowa, are new in the top three.

Liga Portugal: All new market values at a glance

Gyökeres has increased his value as he continues to score goal after goal: he now has 18 goals in just 14 matches in the Portuguese League, in addition to another five in six Champions League matches,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Portugal Gonçalo Tristão Santos said. “And take note: with his new market value, Gyökeres has just become the most valuable player in the history of the Portuguese League, breaking a record set by João Félix’s record.” Gyökeres saw his market value increase by 7.1% from €70m to now €75m.  Back in 2019, when Félix left Benfica to join Atlético Madrid, his market value was €70m.

Interest remains high in Gyökeres as it remains to be seen how many more benchmarks he will set in Portugal. The same can be said about Gyökeres’ teammate Hjulmand. “Hjulmand remains a key player for Sporting,” Santos said. “Despite this being only his second season at the club, he is already the team’s captain and the most crucial player in Sporting’s midfield. He will undoubtedly attract many offers as early as January. If he stays at Alvalade until the end of the season, it will be challenging to keep him beyond the summer transfer market.” The Dane has already been linked with several top European clubs, and as a result, his market value has increased by €5m to €45m.

Liga Portugal update: Samu 2nd – Talents Quenda and Araújo stand out

Also drawing a lot of interest is the new no.2 of the market value rankings, Porto striker Samu. “The Spaniard has been one of the most surprising players in the Portuguese League this season,” Santos said. “At just 20 years old, he has had an immediate impact at Porto, emerging as the team’s best player with ten goals in 11 league matches and five in six Europa League matches. These performances even earned him a debut for the Spanish national team.” With that in mind, Samu’s market value increase from €35m to €50m is only consequential.

Other standouts in this update include Geovany Quenda (Sporting) and Tomás Araújo (Benfica). “Only 17, Quenda started the season without a market value but is now valued at €30 million after establishing himself as a starter and one of Sporting’s most important players in this first half of the season,” Santos said. “He has been playing as the team’s right winger and is one of the most influential and high-performing players.” Meanwhile, Benfica’s center-back Araújo is having his breakthrough season at Luz, surpassing António Silva, who has been relegated to the bench. “Araújo is delivering a high-level campaign and has already been linked to several top European clubs,” Santos said. The center-back saw his market value increase from €13m to €28m.

How Transfermarkt market values work

The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.

The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
