The Liga Portugal becomes the final major European league with a market value update. Overall, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 90 players playing Portugal’s first division. While Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyökeres (€75m) and Porto’s Samu Aghehowa (€50m) remain the two most valuable players, 17-year-old future Chelsea star Geovany Quenda is now joint-third after seeing his market value increase by 50% from €30m to €45m.
“The Sporting super talent was the player who increased the most in value as part of the Liga Portugal update,” Transfermarkt Portugal Area Manager Gonçalo Tristão Santos said. “Although he is still very young, he is already a starter for Sporting and has shown his quality. The biggest reason we increased his market value, however, is that his transfer to Chelsea has already been confirmed.” Quenda will join the Todd Boehly club in a deal worth €52.14m. “The market value would be even higher if he had made his debut for Portugal. Called up three times, he is yet to start.”
The player with the most significant increase in market value based on percentage is 19-year-old Porto midfielder Tomás Pérez. As is the case with Quenda, a recent transfer is the biggest factor for his market value increase, 650% from €400,000 to €3m. “We are talking about a player, who has only played three games for the club,” Tristão said. “But after showing his potential in Argentina with Newell’s Old Boys, Porto paid €3m for him and we had to adjust his market value.”
Liga Portugal market values: Mora and Araújo among talents to watch
Among the players with big upgrades are also two more talents. Pérez’s teammate Rodrigo Mora saw his market value double from €10m to €20m. “Rodrigo Mora is another young talent emerging in Portuguese football,” Tristão said. “Only 17, he has already played 24 games for Porto’s first team in 2024/25, half of them as a starter, and always delivers high-quality performances.”
Over at Benfica, 22-year-old defender Tomás Araújo continues to impress. “Few expected him to be a regular starter so often, but the truth is that he has secured the spot and even relegated António Silva to the bench at times during the season,” Tristão said. “This has led to him making his debut for the Portuguese national team, and now no one doubts that he is one of the most important players in Benfica’s defense.”
There haven’t been just winners, though. Most prominently, Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa saw his market value drop (-€2m to €35m). Also among the biggest losers is his teammate João Mário, with a market value drop of 28.6% from €14m to €10m. Finally, the above-mentioned Silva saw his market value drop by €6m from €38m to €32m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
