The four Champions League semi-finalists have been decided after a thrilling midweek of European football. Arsenal will face Ligue 1 champions PSG, while Barcelona will take on Inter Milan across two legs in May. The Champions League remains the most coveted trophy in club football and all four sides will be confident of being crowned as kings of Europe in Munich’s showpiece final.
Since the European Cup was established in 1955, Real Madrid have won the competition more times than any other club with 15 titles to their name – the European Cup was renamed the Champions League in 1992. The reigning holders, however, were eliminated at the quarter-final stages by Arsenal after a comprehensive 5-1 aggregate win. Mikel Arteta’s men showcased their credentials on the biggest stage at the Santiago Bernabeu and Arsenal will be determined to end their European hoodoo by lifting the trophy this season.
Which clubs have played most Champions League games without winning the trophy?
Arsenal have played the most games in the Champions League without ever winning the most prestigious trophy in club football. The North London club have played 211 games in the competition and they famously reached the final in 2006, but lost to Barcelona. Dynamo Kyiv rank second with the Russian side playing 186 games in the competition with Atlético Madrid occupying third spot (176).
Atlético have lost in two finals across the last decade under Diego Simeone to arch rivals Real Madrid. As the graphic above illustrates, PSG rank fourth (167) and they will face off with Arsenal to reach the final this season. The French giants’ burning desire to lift the Champions League is well-documented under their current ownership structure. PSG spent eye-watering amounts to bring the Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Neymar to Paris but they couldn’t achieve the holy grail, but they’ve found a perfect balance to their side under Luis Enrique.Anderlecht complete the top five with Turkish giants Galatasaray in sixth position.
