It has been announced that Jamie Vardy will leave Leicester City at the end of the season. The 38-year-old is arguably Leicester’s greatest ever player and he was instrumental as the Midlands club completed the unthinkable achievement of winning the Premier League in 2016. Vardy’s journey in English football is remarkable after joining Leicester from Fleetwood Town in 2012 for just €1.24 million to become a full England international.
To date, Vardy has scored 198 goals in 435 games for Leicester but he won’t be part of their quest to secure promotion from the English Championship next season. Leicester’s relegation was confirmed last weekend and Vardy issued a strongly-worded statement labelling his own contribution as a ‘total embarrassment.’ And Leicester have now confirmed that Vardy will be departing, although he won’t be retiring from football altogether. Leicester chair, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, said: “Jamie is unique. He is a special player and an even more special person. He holds a place in the hearts of everyone connected to Leicester City, and he certainly has my deepest respect and affection. I am endlessly grateful for everything he has given to this Football Club.”

Jamie Vardy’s Leicester City legacy
Vardy’s legacy at Leicester will be ever-lasting. The Englishman is the club’s fourth-highest appearance holder in their history and he’s their third-highest goalscorer. Furthermore, Vardy is Leicester’s record goalscorer in the Premier League with 143 and only Mo Salah (188) has scored more of current English top-flight players.

Vardy became the oldest player to win the Premier League golden boot, aged 33 in the 2019-20 season. And as the graphic above illustrates, Vardy has scored more goals (107) than any other player in the Premier League since turning 30. Ian Wright (93) ranks second and Alan Shearer (84) takes third place – you can read more about this statistic here.
