The Manchester derby is unquestionably the biggest fixture in matchday 22 in the Premier League with plenty on the line. Manchester City will travel across the city as the overwhelming favourites with Pep Guardiola’s side 11 points clear of their arch rivals in the bale. City will be aiming to cut the gap to league leaders Arsenal to just three points ahead of Mikel Arteta’s men taking on Nottingham Forest in the late kick-off.

Manchester City won the corresponding fixture in September 3-0 and their squad value is over €500m higher than Manchester United’s – so all signs point to an away win at Old Trafford. United still have ambitions of qualifying for European competition and Michael Carrick will take charge of his first game since being named head coach until the end of the season. There’s been some famous Manchester derby fixtures over the years, but which player has scored the most goals in the fixture across history? Let’s find out!

The top scorers in Manchester derby history

Wayne Rooney is the record scorer in the Manchester derby with 11 goals. Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer played against City five times while playing in the famous red jersey and he also provided 11 assists against them as a United player. As the graphic below shows, two City icons are tied level in second place with 10 goals, Francis Lee and Joe Hayes.

The duo are amongst City’s top goalscorers in history with Hayes third and Lee sixth. Sergio Agüero is City’s record scorer and he ranks fourth alongside arguably Man United’s greatest ever player, Sir Bobby Charlton. Interestingly, Erling Haaland features high on the list with eight goals and he will be expected to eclipse Rooney’s record – if he remains at City for the next couple of seasons. There’s only three clubs – RB Leipzig, West ham and Wolves – that Haaland has scored more goals against in his career than United.
