Barcelona were crowned champions of Spain for the 29th time in their history after a dominant 2-0 win over Real Madrid. It’s consecutive LaLiga titles for Hansi Flick with Barca boasting a 14 point advantage over their rivals and they will hit the 100 point mark, if they win the final three games. It also secured a special achievement in João Cancelo’s incredibly decorated career as he became the first player in history to win four of the top five leagues.
The Portuguese defender failed to win LaLiga in his previous spell at Barca but he returned on an initial loan deal from Al-Hilal to make history. Cancelo has been an important player since arriving in January and he played the full game against Madrid as Barca sealed the title. The 31-year-old has made 13 appearances in the league under Flick and he deservedly collected his winners model.
Cancelo has now won the league title in Spain, France, England and Italy with only France missing to complete the full top five league set. His first league title arrived when Juventus were crowned Serie A champions in 2019 and he moved to Manchester City this summer. Cancelo won three titles in total with Pep Guardiola’s men and he also won the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich in 2023. Interestingly, the full-back collected two winners’ medals during the 2022/23 campaign; one with Man City and the other with Bayern Munich after moving to Germany in January. In total, 22 players have won league titles in three of the top five leagues, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimović, David Beckham and Thierry Henry.
