Arsenal have been crowned Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years, but there was still plenty to play for on the final day of the season. The Gunners celebrated lifting the trophy for the first time since 2003/04 when the ‘Invincibles’ clinched the title without losing a single game, with their title celebrations kicking off at Selhurst Park as they beat Crystal Palace 2-1.
Elsewhere, there were huge ramifications in six of the 10 games on the 38th and final matchday of the Premier League season. Places in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League were still to be decided, while one of Tottenham and West Ham would be relegated to the EFL Championship, joining Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers. To recap a dramatic day of Premier League drama, Transfermarkt has you covered on the final day of the season…
Premier League: European qualification spots
Aston Villa
Started the day: 4th
Finished: 4th
2026/27 playing in: UEFA Champions League
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa had already secured Champions League football, and they went one further by confirming fourth place with a shock win at Manchester City. In Pep Guardiola’s 593rd and final game, Ollie Watkins scored twice to seal a comeback win. Villa finish fourth, meaning there will be only five English teams in the Champions League.
Liverpool
Started the day: 5th
Finished: 5th
2026/27 playing in: UEFA Champions League
In the end, it didn’t matter what Liverpool did at Anfield, they would have finished fifth regardless. Villa’s win over City meant they could only finish fifth at the highest, and they were held to a draw by Brentford in Mohamed Salah’s final game for the club.
Bournemouth
Started the day: 6th
Finished: 6th
2026/27 playing in: UEFA Europa League
Bournemouth had already confirmed a spot in Europe next season and now they know they will be playing Europa League football. It’s an incredible legacy for Andoni Iraola given the squad turnover he has had to deal with, going 15 games unbeaten to the end of the season as they drew with Nottingham Forest.
Brighton
Started the day: 7th
Finished: 8th
2026/27 playing in: UEFA Conference League
Brighton had the chance to leapfrog Bournemouth into sixth place if they beat Manchester United at the Amex Stadium and the Cherries lose at Nottingham Forest. But they never got anywhere near close. The Seagulls were well beaten by Manchester United at home, putting their European hopes in doubt. However, Chelsea and Brentford’s failure to win meant they finished in the Conference League places.
Chelsea
Started the day: 8th
Finished: 10th
2026/27 playing in: Not in Europe
Chelsea had a superior goal difference over Brentford, knowing if they beat Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and Brighton fail to beat Man United, seventh place would be theirs. But much like their season, everything that could’ve gone wrong did. Wesley Fofana was sent off and Calum McFarlane’s reign ended with a loss, meaning Xabi Alonso takes over with Chelsea not in continental competition.
Brentford
Started the day: 9th
Finished: 9th
2026/27 playing in: Not in Europe
Brentford were level on points with Chelsea and finish above their west London rivals, but a draw with Liverpool means they finish outside of the European places on goal difference.
Sunderland
Started the day: 10th
Finished: 7th
2026/27 playing in: UEFA Europa League
Sunderland’s task was fairly simple: beat Chelsea. And that they did. Regis Le Bris’ men not only qualify for Europe, they leapfrog the Blues, Brentford and Brighton into the Europa League. Incredible!
Premier League relegation permutations
Tottenham
Started the day: 17th
Finished: 17th
Playing in 2026/27: Premier League
West Ham
Started the day: 18th
Finished: 18th
Playing in 2026/27: EFL Championship
There were nervy moments, especially towards the end, but it all worked out for Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi. Requiring a victory over Everton, the north Londoners did what they had to do and it meant West Ham’s convincing win in east London was irrelevant. The Hammers, finishing with 39 points, drop down to the EFL Championship for the first time in 14 years.
