Kylian Mbappé is unquestionably one of the biggest superstars at the World Cup and the Real Madrid attacker made history in France’s opener against Senegal. Didier Deschamps’ men are the favourites to win the prestigious trophy this summer and Mbappé will be central to their aspirations. Based on Transfermarkt’s famed market values, France have the most valuable squad at the competition with Mbappe the third most valuable player at €180m – behind Lamine Yamal and Erling Haaland.

Mbappé is unquestionably their talisman and he equalled Olivier Giroud as France’s all-time record goalscorer after breaking the deadlock against Senegal. The 27-year-old was miles from his best in an underwhelming first half but he came alive after the break to slot past Eduoard Mendy after a sublime through pass from Michael Olise. It brought up Mbappé’s 57th goal in his 99th appearance for his country, which puts him into the history books.

France’s all-time record goalscorers

Mbappé has now levelled Giroud on 57 goals but he reached the landmark in 38 fewer games than the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker. Mbappé also surpassed Pele’s tally of 12 World Cup goals and the Madrid superstar is now only three goals behind Miroslav Klose’s record of 16. The top ten list of France’s top ten goalscorers is littered with world-class players with Thierry Henry, Antoine Griezmann, Michael Platini and Zinédine Zidane all featuring. It’s just a matter of time until Mbappe breaks Giroud’s record and that’s likely to arrive in France’s next game against Iraq.
