France went into the 2026 World Cup as one of the tournament favourites and unlike some of the other top nations, have lived up to that hype so far. They dismantled Sweden 3-0 in the round of 32 after winning all three group games. Their attacking talent is simply unmissable. They have been given freedom by Didier Deschamps to interchange and strut their stuff. And it’s mesmerising. Kylian Mbappé has looked back to his frightening best, topping the goalscoring charts with Lionel Messi, but perhaps even more pleasing on the eye has been the supremely talented Michael Olise.
Born in Hammersmith, and raised in London. Through the academy at Reading and nurtured at Crystal Palace. Olise is the one that got away for England. And he is shining for France. He registered another two fantastic assists against Sweden meaning he now already has six assists across this summer’s tournament. But where does that rank Olise among the players with the most assists at a single World Cup? Let’s find out.
Most assists in single World Cup | Olise chases record
Leading the way with the most assists in a single tournament we have to go back all the way to 1950, where Brazilian Ademir provided seven assists in six games as Brazil eventually lost the final to Uruguay. Olise now already stands second with six assists in just four matches for France this summer. Surely he will at least draw level with the record? Also with six assists but in six matches was the great Pelé in 1970 and German Fritz Walter in 1954.

There are then six players who have managed five assists in a single World Cup including the Argentine icon Diego Maradona in 1986. Behind Olise in the assist charts for this summer’s tournament is Brazil’s Bruno Guimarães with four assists, whilst Norway’s Martin Ødegaard and Mexico’s Roberto Alvarado have three and remain in the tournament.
