After a crazy spending spree in the summer, Liverpool have been incredibly quiet during the January window so far. Many Liverpool fans want reinforcements in January with a centre-back top of the wishlist but links to potential additions have been scarce. The Merseyside club broke the record for the highest expenditure in one transfer window with €483 million invested in new additions.

Liverpool broke the British transfer record by paying €145m to Newcastle United for Alexander Isak but the Swedish international struggled badly before sustaining a serious injury. The jury remains firmly out on Florian Wirtz, but there’s been signs of promise after a disastrous start. Despite opting against doing any business so far this month, Liverpool have made some statement signings in January across the years and we’ve analysed their top ten record additions during the winter transfer window.

Liverpool’s most expensive January addition is also one of their greatest ever signings, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutch international cost €85 from Southampton in 2018 and he’s been worth every penny. The additions of Van Dijk and Alisson were integral to transforming Jurgen Klopp’s men into Premier League and Champions League winners. As the graphic below illustrates, Luis Díaz’s €49m arrival from Porto ranks second and he must be considered a success, especially as he earned Anfield chiefs a substantial profit when he departed for Bayern Munich last summer.

Cody Gakpo completes the top three and the Dutch international strengthened Liverpool’s squad, although his recent form hasn’t been great. Luis Suárez ranks fifth and the Uruguayan also turned out to be an incredible January addition with 82 goals in 133 games in the famous red jersey. Philippe Coutinho also makes the top ten list and his €135m departure to Barcelona in 2018 remains Liverpool’s record sale.
