It’s been an extremely disappointing season for Tottenham Hotspur but their impressive form in the Champions League has been the only solace for disgruntled Spurs fans. Tottenham secured qualification for the most prestigious club competition in football by winning the Europa League in a season where they finished 17th in the Premier League. Despite ending a 17-year trophy drought, Ange Postecoglou was dismissed by Daniel Levy and Thomas Frank was appointed as his replacement.
There’s been no tangible sign of improvement domestically under the former Brentford manager with Spurs languishing in 14th and out of both cup competitions. But the Lilywhites have fared much better in Europe with their 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund catapulting them into fourth in the Champions League standings and well-placed to secure automatic qualification for the last 16. Impressively, Tottenham are now 24 games unbeaten in European competition at their North London home and we’ve analysed where that ranks in history.
The longest unbeaten home record in European competition
We’ve analysed the data from the three main UEFA club competitions; the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. Firstly, it’s imperative to address a technicality in Tottenham’s record around a hugely controversial game against Rennes in 2021. UEFA awarded the French side a 3-0 win, adjudging that Tottenham forfeited the fixture as they couldn’t name a team due to a substantial Covid outbreak. It was the final game of the Conference League and a rearranged date couldn’t be agreed, but we’ve not included that fixture in our results as the game, naturally, was never actually played.
Therefore, as the graphic above illustrates, Tottenham’s current 24-game unbeaten run is the joint-third longest in history across European history, according to Transfermarkt’s database. Interestingly, Tottenham’s run stretches across all three UEFA competitions and they are level with two other English clubs, Arsenal and Manchester United – both their runs, coincidentally, ended in 2009. It’s unlikely that Tottenham will go unbeaten in their next six home games in European competition to match the record of Bayern Munich, with the German giants going 30 games without defeat at their former Olympiastadion home. The all-time record goes to Barcelona, who embarked on an incredible 36 game unbeaten run at the Nou Camp between 2013 and 2020.
