Cole Palmer may have Man Utd regret after Chelsea defeat

Cole Palmer quashed talk of a potential Chelsea exit this week when asked about his future. Ironically, speculation has been rife that he could join Manchester United in the summer, the club he supported as a boy. But the Wythenshawe native laughed off links to the Red Devils, insisting he is only focused on helping the Blues achieve their goal of finishing in the top four this season.

At Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, Palmer would’ve wanted to put that talk to bed with a performance worthy of his incredible ability. Instead, he might’ve been left wondering if he had made the right choice in committing his future to Chelsea.

“Everyone just talks. When I see it I just laugh,” Palmer told The Guardian. “Obviously Manchester is my home. All my family are there, but I don’t miss it. Maybe I’ll miss it if I don’t go for three months or something. But then when I get home I think there’s nothing there for me anyway. I’ve got no plans to move from Chelsea. We’ve still got a lot to play for. We’ve got the FA Cup semi-final [against Leeds] and if we finish in a Champions League spot it puts us in a good position to sign players that we need.”

It’s been a week of public messages for Chelsea off the pitch. Palmer’s commitment to staying came shortly after Moisés Caicedo signed a new long-term contract to June 2033, which included a pay bump for the Ecuadorian midfield general. Then the usually-quiet co-owner Behdad Eghbali gave his first public interview about Chelsea since Clearlake Capital assumed control in May 2022, addressing a number of pressing issues facing the club. The west London club are trying to take control of their destiny after weeks and perhaps months of sliding into the unknown.

But it has done little to quell the vocal dissent from fans, with protests consisting of over 500 fans held outside Stamford Bridge ahead of kick-off. The Enzo Fernández suspension saga has also raised some questions as to how the club is being run, while head coach Liam Rosenior is under mounting pressure following three consecutive defeats. The club hadn’t lost four league matches without scoring since February 1998, establishing just how bleak things had become in recent weeks.

Chelsea record vs Man Utd at Stamford Bridge

On a more positive note, Chelsea hadn’t lost at home to Manchester United in the Premier League since a 2-0 defeat under Frank Lampard during the 2019/20 season. And with United missing four senior centre-backs – Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt – it offered a golden chance to put things right. Losing Estevao to injury early on certainly didn’t help their cause, but Alejandro Garnacho – the Argentinian who left Old Trafford last summer – had something to prove as he came off the bench.

In a somewhat unspectacular first half, Chelsea had the better chances with Fernandez close to finding the far corner and Liam Delap scoring, only for the flag to be raised against Palmer. But United were clinical when the chance arrived, with Bruno Fernandes creating his 18th assist of the season with a cutback for Matheus Cunha to strike home. More boos followed at the half-time whistle for the home side, with the home faithful seemingly frustrated with conceding a type of goal they have let in far too many times this season.

With no changes at the break, Chelsea’s sloppy passing and stagnant movement continued. Where would the equaliser come from? As it turns out, Delap very nearly made it 1-1 only to watch his glancing header bounce back off the crossbar. And again, another cross resulted in Chelsea striking the upright. They had United against the ropes but just couldn’t find the leveller.

United huffed and puffed, but ultimately held out Chelsea and Palmer, who rarely looked like troubling the United defence. In failing to find the net, it confirmed that unwanted record of failing to score in four consecutive defeats – the first time that’s happened in 28 years.

Palmer claimed he is content to stay at Stamford Bridge. But with Champions League football looking nearly out of the question for 2026/27, he might live to regret such a show of faith in the project after this latest defeat.
