101 goals and counting

Kane, Olise & Díaz hit 101 goals - no other attacking trio in Europe even comes close

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany will have a very simple plan to get his team to the Champions League final: score more goals than Paris Saint-Germain. That may seem rather simplistic, but the manner in which the Bundesliga champions went blow-for-blow with their French counterparts in Paris last week pointed to the tactics that have worked well for Bayern this season. Few clubs can match them when it comes to scoring goals and if they are to reach a European final in may, it will be thanks to their potency in front of goal rather than their defensive fortitude.

Indeed, when it comes to scoring goals there is no front line in European football that even coms close to Bayern’s three attacking stars. Ahead of Wednesday’s clash with PSG, Harry Kane, Luis Díaz and Michael Olise have bagged a combined 101 goals in all competitions for Bayern this season. Naturally, Kane has the majority of those goals (54), followed by Díaz (26) and then Olise (21). And, as we can see in the table above, they’re considerably ahead of what the rest of European football can offer this season.

The next best attacking trio in Europe’s top leagues this season are Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr and Federico Valverde, who can lay claim to 71 goals between them. They’re closely followed by Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Ferran Torres on 63 goals, then Erling Haaland, Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki claim fourth place with 56 combined goals in all competitions. However, as we can see, aside from the Spanish giants, most of the trios within the top 10 are sitting at around half the number of goals Kane & Co. have bagged this season. And, perhaps more notably ahead of Wednesday night’s clash, Bayern’s trio have scored more than twice as many as PSG’s trio of Ousmane Dembélé, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Désiré Doué. Which may prove pivotal to deciding which of these teams reaches the Champions League final.
