Midfielder Federico Valverde went to hospital with a head injury after a dressing room row with Real Madrid team-mate Aurelien Tchouaméni. The Uruguayan said the injury, which will keep him out of Sunday’s match against Barcelona, was caused when he “accidentally hit a table”. The pair were also thought to have had a less serious feud 24 hours prior. There have been several other training ground bust ups too in the past month. So can Barcelona capitalise and secure the title? They have a decent recent record against Real Madrid, but down the years which players have won the most El Clásico matches? Let’s take a look.
Players with most El Clásico wins
Leading the way, having tasted El Clásico glory 23 times from his 48 games is former Barca midfielder Sergio Busquets. The Spaniard was a stalwart in midfield in one of the club’s most successful eras. In second is former Madrid man Paco Gento, who won 21 of his 42 El Clásico games in the 1950s and 60s. In third is ex Barca defender Gerard Piqué with 19 wins from 40 matches. He just edges past the great Lionel Messi; the Argentina also won 18 El Clásico matches but from 45 fixtures. Real Madrid icon Alfredo Di Stefano is fifth ith 17 wins from 30 games.

Former Barcelona midfielder and manager Xavi is sixth with 17 wins from 42 matches. There are then three players with 16 wins. The legendary midfield duo of Andrès Iniesta and Luka Modrić both won 16 of their 28 El Clásico matches. Former Madrid player Manolo Sanchís is tenth, after boasting an impressive record of 15 wins from 23 games against Barcelona.
