Liverpool are set to lose yet another top talent on a free transfer this summer. After losing Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid last season, defender Ibrahima Konaté is now also set to leave the club after the expiration of his contract this summer. The 27-year-old’s existing deal at Anfield, which he signed after joining the club from RB Leipzig in 2021, expires at the end of June.

Konaté had been in talks with the club for a new contract as early as in October 2024 and said in April that he was “close” to an agreement, saying there was a “big chance” he would stay put next season and it is what he “always wanted”. However, talks have not progressed and the Frenchman is now set to become a free agent. But what’s next for the centre-back? Transfermarkt has picked out four clubs who could sign Konaté this summer.

Four clubs who could sign Ibrahima Konaté

Real Madrid

Real Madrid had previously shown interest in the France international for some time, though late last year reports emerged the Spanish giants had communicated to Liverpool they were no longer interested in signing him. However, with José Mourinho now set to take over, and Madrid’s defence in need of significant reinforcements, the chance to sign such an experienced player for nothing may be too tempting to resist.

PSG

Another side who are emerging as one of the favourites for his signature are Champions League holders and finalists Paris Saint-Germain. Marquinhos isn’t getting any younger, and the sell of luring Konaté back to his home nation may help the Parisians get a deal over the line. Nevertheless, PSG do already have a plethora of talented defenders, so his high wages may be seen as too off-putting.

Chelsea

If there’s one team who need a top experienced centre-back, then it’s hard to look past Chelsea. Their youthfulness-based recruitment strategy has come to haunt them on the pitch this season, finishing 10th and missing out on Europe. Konaté could add some serious steel among their talented young side, and help them get back into Europe under Xabi Alonso.

Barcelona

Konaté’s pace and physicality could make him perfect for Barcelona’s notoriously high line. Barca themselves have sometimes lacked experience at the back and Konaté could be an astute piece of business for the Catalan club. However, they have already splashed out on Anthony Gordon and are reportedly after Julián Alvarez, so Konate’s wages may prove to be a financial step too far.
