Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have reached an agreement on a deal for Sandro Tonali to move to the North London club. First reported by the Athletic, Newcastle have landed an eye-watering fee for the Italian international with Tottenham to pay an initial €108m, plus another €8.8m in bonuses based upon European qualification. Tottenham have already agreed a €99m deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, which would smash their current transfer record but the imminent signing of Tonali will eclipse that. The 26-year-old will become the 9th most expensive player in Premier League history, when Elliot Anderson’s move to Manchester City is completed too.

It’s understood that the Italian’s representatives made clear to Newcastle chiefs that he wanted to seek a new opportunity this summer and it represents a significant profit for the Magpies. Tonali was enticed by the move to London, while he will also earn a much higher wage and he’s been sold on the project by countryman Roberto De Zerbi. It will be a summer of upheaval at Newcastle with Anthony Gordon joining Barcelona and there’s also legitimate interest in club captain Bruno Guimarães from Arsenal.

It’s been an incredibly busy start to the summer for Tottenham as they aim to overhaul their squad and transform their squad after narrowly avoiding relegation last season. Before agreeing to take charge for the final six games of the season and mastermind their escape, De Zerbi sought assurances that he’d be backed in the transfer window and that’s certainly been the case. Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi joined on free transfers, Jan Paul van Hecke arrived from Brighton with Fernandes and Tonali set to bolster the midfield department.
