In late June we reported that Premier League champions Arsenal have reportedly made a verbal offer to Newcastle United to try to sign midfielder Bruno Guimarães this summer. The proposal was thought to be worth around €65 million, but was rejected by the St James’ Park club, who were reluctant to sell the Brazilian this summer.

However, the player has now reportedly informed Newcastle of his desire to leave the club and join Arsenal this summer. The Gunners are thought to be willing to pay up to around €70m – which is the player’s current market value on Transfermarkt. The 28-year-old crashed out of the World Cup with Brazil against Norway after Guimarães missed a penalty He will turn 29 years old in November.

Guimarães joined Newcastle from Lyon in January 2022 for €42.1m and has established himself as a key part of Eddie Howe’s side and one of the best midfielders in the league. He has made over 150 Premier League appearances, scoring 30 goals from centre-midfield. He is also an important player for Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, starting all three games at the World Cup. Newcastle have already sold winger Anthony Gordon to Barcelona this summer in a deal worth €80m, with a sell-on clause also included, as well as Sandro Tonali, who signed for Tottenham Hotspur for €108m.

Arsenal are in the market for midfield reinforcements, after Declan Rice and Martín Zubimendi were showing serious signs of fatigue towards the end of last season, after being overworked in the Gunners’ engine room. Mikel Arteta’s team have also been linked with Genk’s Konstantinos Karetsas and Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha this summer.

In past fixtures against Arsenal, Guimaráes has been involved in controversy, including when he appeared to elbow Jorginho in the head in a fixture in 2023. Newcastle will not be able to offer Guimarães any European football next term, after finishing in 12th place in the Premier League last season. Some reports also suggest that the Brazilian favours a move to Arsenal this summer and could even attempt to force a move.
