In 2006/07, AC Milan took revenge against Liverpool, Real Madrid won the title in Spain, Manchester United dethroned Chelsea, and VfB Stuttgart became the surprise champions in Germany. As part of 20-year market values on Transfermarkt, we look back to the most valuable players of that season. For the third year in a row, Ronaldinho was the most valuable player.

After another outstanding season, Ronaldinho’s market value was set at €70m. The Brazilian scored 21 goals in LaLiga—the most in the playmaker’s career. Next in the market value ranking were Andriy Shevchenko (€51m), who joined Chelsea for €44m in the summer of 2006, Arsenal’s Thierry Henry (€50m), and AC Milan’s Kaká (€49.5m). Unlike in the case in Serie A, Shevchenko struggled in England, scoring just four goals in 30 games.

The fact that Chelsea won the championship the year before also impacted the market values of Shevchenko’s teammates. Frank Lampard (€39.8m) and John Terry (€30m), two more Chelsea stars, made the most valuable XI of the year. New to the team was Cristiano Ronaldo (€34m), who won his first championship with Manchester United, and his market value would take off in the following years.

The two Italian World Cup winners Alessandro Nesta (€29m) and Gianluigi Buffon (€33m) as well as Barcelona’s Carles Puyol (€27m) and Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard (€38.4m) were also included.
