Major League Soccer will keep one of its major stars. Inter Miami CF announced that star striker Luis Suárez has signed a contract extension for the 2025 season. The announcement comes after Inter Miami’s surprise first-round exit from the 2024 MLS Cup Playoffs and the departure of hugely successful head coach Tata Martino. Suárez signed a TAM deal ahead of the 2024 season and, according to the MLSPA salary guide, earned $1.5m this year.

“In 2024, Luis brought to Inter Miami all of the elements that make him one of the greatest strikers of all time,” president of football operations Raúl Sanllehí said in a club statement. “He performed at an elite level for us, and we’re excited to see that continue next season. Luis was not only our leading scorer this season but also a leader for the group. His impact cannot be understated.”

Despite arriving with knee problems from Brazilian side Grêmio, Suárez has been incredibly consistent for Inter Miami this season. Together with teammate Lionel Messi and LAFC star striker Denis Bouanga, the 37-year-old finished second in MLS goalscoring with 20 goals in 27 games. Together with Messi, Suárez formed the most dangerous attacking duo in MLS. Finally, only Messi, with a goal every 74 minutes during the regular, was more efficient among top goalscorers than Suárez, who netted a goal every 96 minutes.

Luis Suárez signs Inter Miami contract – Neymar to arrive next?

The question is whether Suárez, who will turn 38 in 2025, can continue to play at this level. The Uruguayan was responsible for 37% of Inter Miami’s goals in 2024 and, unlike previous years, struggled very little with injuries in 2024. But some of that came down to Martino managing Suárez’s minutes carefully, with the striker missing some games to rest his knee. Game management will also once again be key for Suárez next season.

Inter Miami, in turn, would like to add another attacking talent, potentially even Neymar, who is still heavily linked with a move to the club. Indeed, Suárez signing a new contract could be a sign to come. Like Messi, Suárez would certainly relish the opportunity to play with his former Barça teammate. Will Miami bring the band back together. Two of the three pieces are now in place for the 2025 season.
