The Europa League is often in the shadows of the more prestigious Champions League but it’s still a fantastic spectacle. The second biggest UEFA club competition is often incredibly exciting and it provides an opportunity to clubs from outside the European elite to get their hands on silverware. The competition was established in 1972 as the UEFA Cup before being renamed the Europa League ahead of the 2009/10 season.
Sevilla are the most decorated club in the tournament’s history with seven titles and Unai Emery led them to four of those triumphs. No player has scored more goals in the competition than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with the Gabon striker netting for Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Barcelona and Marseille in the competition. But which players have provided the most assists in Europa League history, since 2009? Let’s find out using Transfermarkt data – you can view the gallery below.
Which players have provided the most assists in the Europa League?
Dries Mertens has provided the most assists in the Europa League with 21 in 67 games. The 37-year-old could still add to that tally as he’s still playing for Galatasaray and he’s already provided three assists in four Europa League games this season. Bruno Fernandes will have his eye on the record and the Manchester United star will be targeting Mertens’ record in the competition with the English giants this season. Fernandes has the best assists per game record (0.4) of any player in the top ten list below.
Juan Mata, Fernandes’ former teammate at Man United, ranks third with 17 assists across 50 appearances in the competition. Henrikh Mkhitarayan famously scored as United won the 2017 final against Ajax and he ranks seventh with Mesut Özil, his former teammate at Arsenal, in eighth with 13 assists in 29 games. Ten players are level on 12 assists in the competition including former Atlético Madrid midfielder Diego and current Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.
