With the season almost halfway through, Transfermarkt has updated the market values of 467 Eredivisie players. There is very little change at the top of the ranking, but while they are still first and second, PSV winger Johan Bakayoko and Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez both dropped in market value after the update.

“Despite PSV’s excellent season, the speedy flank player has struggled to continue his play from last season,” Transfermarkt Area Manager Netherlands Jesper Siereveld said. “At this time last season, for example, he was already sitting on 13 assists, while this season, he has given only three key passes.” As a result, Bakayoko was downgraded by €5m to €40m.
“Despite his struggles, Bakayoko remains the most valuable player in the Eredivisie,” Siereveld said. As Santiago Gimenez has to give up €3m in market value and thus ends up at a value of €37m.” On the surface, the Mexican star striker is playing a good season with ten goals and three assists in 12 games across all competitions. But part of the story is also that Gimenez has struggled with injuries. Despite his goalscoring exploits, Gimenez has not had a robust market over the last several transfer windows.
Eredivisie market values: Tillman and Pepi up – Lozano drops
Gimenez isn’t the only Mexican to see his market value drop in the update. Also down in market value is PSV’s Hirving Lozano. Lozano is set to join Major League Soccer expansion side San Diego FC in January. With that in mind, the 29-year-old saw his market value drop from €15m to €12m even if his production, four goals and two assists in 10 games was consistent this season.
While Gimenez and Lozano drop, PSV’s US men’s national team stars Ricardo Pepi and Malik Tillman see their market values increase. Tillman has firmly established himself in the top ten of most valuable players in the Eredivisie with a market value increase of €5m to €30m. After scoring 12 goals and two assists in 22 games across all competitions, Pepi also saw his market value increase. In his case, the player is up by €6m to now €18m.
How Transfermarkt market values work
The Transfermarkt market values are calculated, taking into account various pricing models. A major factor is the Transfermarkt community, whose members discuss and evaluate player market values in detail. In general, the Transfermarkt market values are not to be equated with transfer fees.
The goal is not to predict a price but an expected value of a player in a free market. Both individual transfer modalities and situational conditions are relevant in determining market values. Examples of this are listed below. Transfermarkt does not use an algorithm (you can find the detailed market value definition here).
