Rodgers record over

Aberdeen shocked Celtic to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in 35 years to end the Hoops’ treble celebrations. Brendan Rodgers’ men looked destined to win their sixth treble in ten seasons at half-time as they led through Alfie Dorrington’s own-goal. Celtic have dominated Scottish football for over a decade and Rodgers would have been the first manager in the club’s history to win three domestic trebles.

Moreover, Celtic beat Aberdeen just ten days ago with a heavily rotated side but the Dons showed impressive resilience to lift the Scottish Cup. Shayden Morris made a notable difference off the bench and his fizzed cross was spilled into his own net by Kasper Schmeichel. After a nervy extra-time, Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston missed from the spot in the penalty shoot-out as Aberdeen clinched their 8th Scottish Cup to secure European group stage football.
Aberdeen’s rollercoaster season ends in glory
All signs pointed to Celtic winning at Hampden with Rodgers’ undefeated in all fourteen visitors to the national stadium but Aberdeen ruined Celtic’s party – it was also Rodgers’ first defeat in the Scottish Cup. Jimmy Thelin enjoyed an incredible impact after being appointed at Pittodrie, winning ten of his first 11 games in the Scottish Premiership before winning just five more across the rest of the season. Aberdeen finished in fifth place in the table after defeat on the final day of the season but they’ve secured guaranteed European group stage football by winning the Scottish Cup.
They will play in the qualifiers for the Europa League but they will drop into the Europa Conference League should they fail to progress – but Aberdeen’s triumph has bad news for Hibernian as they missed out on the passage. Remarkably, Aberdeen’s last Scottish Cup triumph in 1990 arrived after beating Celtic and they are now level with Hearts on eight titles in Scotland’s biggest cup competition.

Naturally, Aberdeen boss Thelin was delighted with lifting the trophy, stating: “We talked about it all week, we have to do it together with our fans. Everybody has to believe, and then anything can happen. We had to dream big in the final. Football is so amazing. You have to be strong in the difficult times, stick together, keep believing. We tried to put a smile on the face of the supporters, and we did today. We have a lot to look forward to.”
