The January transfer window has been relatively quiet in comparison to previous years, but one potential deal could light a spark that ignites a flurry of movement in the dying days of the month. According to reports in France, Tottenham are now prepared to pull the full weight of their January transfer budget behind an offer for Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel. The French forward has reportedly demanded a move away from the Bundesliga giants and according to publication L’Equipe, Spurs have offererd €60 million to sign the 19-year-old star and Bayern have reportedly accepted it.

Why does Mathys Tel want to leave Bayern Munich?

Tel made the move to Bayern in the summer of 2022 as something of an unknown quantity, when the Bundesliga giants paid €20 million to sign the striker after just 10 first team appearances for Stade Rennais. Based largely off the back of his performances at youth level, Tel was seen as a player for the future and as a result featured as little more than an impact sub in his first season in Germany. Over the course of 28 games the young striker averaged around 21 minutes per appearance, but still bagged a respectable six goals in all competitions. In the following season, Tel’s stature in the Bayern first team grew as his minutes more than doubled and the striker bagged 10 goals and six assists in 41 appearances. However, the player was still seen as a back-up to Bayern’s starting XI and in many cases was filling in for injured stars rather than nailing down a consistent role in the team.

Indeed, over the course of the 23/24 season, Tel started just six league games and just one Champions League clash. Much of this was due to the fact that Harry Kane was Bayern’s undisputed striker, while the two wing positions were fiercely contested by the likes of Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala. That competition only got tougher this season, when Bayern forked out €53m to sign Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, after appointing a new head coach in Vincent Kompany who has largely overlooked Tel in his first team plans. To date, the French forward has started just two out of Bayern’s 19 league games and has come off the bench on just six occasions. As such, in many ways Tel is not only struggling to break into Bayern’s starting XI but now seems to be going backwards at the club this season.

Which clubs could sign Mathys Tel?

As things currently stand it would seem as though Tottenham now led the race to sign Tel, but they aren’t the only Premier League club looking to sign the young star. As the Daily Mail reports, Chelsea have held an interest in signing Tel for quite some time and this week resumed talks with their German counterparts after the player’s reported demands to leave Munich. The English publication claims that Tel has no less than seven offers on the table, stating that a number of other Premier League sides are desperate to sign the player. Tottenham, Aston Villa and Arsenal are all referenced in the report, but nothing concrete seems to be stated as of yet. The other big club that could look to sign Tel are Manchester United. Sky Sports Germany report that if the Old Trafford club are successful in selling Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho in this window, they could then turn their attention towards signing Tel as a replacement to both players on the left wing.

Although Tel’s market value currently stands at €30m, Bayern would likely demand much more from any potential buyer for the player’s signature due to his obvious potential and the fact that they would be selling a player in the middle of the season. Here, Chelsea may have a notable advantage, due to the fact that the German giants have reportedly held a long-standing interest in signing their own want-away forward Christopher Nkunku. If a deal could be struck that allowed Nkunku to move to Munich, Bayern may be more inclined to let Tel move the other way. However, it seems as though Tottenham may have met Bayern’s price for the young player and are now prepared to sell him for the right price.
