Liverpool’s ability to end Manchester City’s dominance of the Premier League has undoubtedly been one of the biggest stories in European football this season and that was certainly reflected in the voting for the 2024/25 Transfermarkt Player of the Season award. Amidst some serious competition from world class players across the English top-flight and indeed within his own team, Mohamed Salah was crowned as the very best player in the league this season by our very own users. And there’s little doubt that the consensus was unanimously in favour of the Anfield forward.

Indeed, Salah has perhaps had the best season of his career as the Egyptian star has thrown off any preconception that assumes players in their thirties should begin to slow down and offer less and less at the highest level. Rather remarkably, the 32-year-old forward finished the season with an incredible 29 goals and 18 assists in just 38 league games for Arne Slot’s team. That tally of 48 goal contributions in a single season is Salah’s best ever return in 10 seasons in the Premier League and no less than 18 more than second-placed Alexander Isak in this season’s standings for league goals and assists.

This somewhat unprecedented consistency in front of goal undoubtedly formed the backbone of Liverpool’s title charge, helping Slot’s side to overcome a strong challenger in Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal and win Liverpool’s 20th league title. Alongside the sheer quantity of goals and assists that Salah amassed over the course of the season, he also scored a crucial goal in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal, as well as a remarkable four goals and assists in both wins over Man City. And while football is undoubtedly a team game, no single individual can lay claim to providing more for their team’s success this season than the Egyptian forward, which was undoubtedly the main thrust behind the club’s decision to sign Salah up to a new contract until 2027 in April.
