Pushing for promotion?

Wrexham couldn’t have hoped for a better start to life in the English Championship. Not only are the club that were bought over by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in 2000 ninth in the league table and just one point off a play-off spot after 26 games in their first ever season in the competition, but they also recently caused waves in the FA Cup, when they knocked Premier League giants Nottingham Forest out of the third round, when a 3-3 thriller ended in Phil Parkinson’s side winning the tie on penalties.
Following back-to-back promotions in their last three seasons, many football fans in England and across the world have taken a particular interest in Wrexham since the aforementioned Hollywood owners began to finance the club’s ascent up the English football pyramid. Prior to this season, Wrexham had spent around €5.94 million on transfer signings. But following their promotion to the Championship, the Welsh side have spent considerably more money to not only establish themselves as a team capable of staying in the English second tier but also potentially one that could get promoted to the Premier League.
How much have Wrexham spent in the Championship?
So far this season Wrexham have spent just under €38m on new signings, with all but one of their 10 most expensive signings ever coming in the summer transfer window. That includes the €5.8m they spent to sign Manchester City academy star Callum Doyle, the €7.5m they spent on Coventry City defensive midfielder Ben Sheaf and Nathan Broadhead’s €8.7m move from Ipswich Town to the Racecourse Ground. Which means the club have now spent a grand total of €43.9m on new signings under the current ownership group. And that certainly puts them among some of the big hitters in the Championship.

In terms of this season alone, Wrexham have undoubtedly been one of the biggest spenders in the league. Their €38m summer spending spree places them third in the division in terms of total expenditures on new signings, behind only Southampton (€55.9m) and Ipswich Town (€59.3m). However, unlike most clubs in the league, Wrexham haven’t had to rely on player sales to fund their new signings. And, as such, the club’s net spend in the transfer window this season is actually the highest in the league – and more than twice the second highest net spend in the division, which is Swansea City’s €14.8m transfer bill. In no uncertain terms, Wrexham have been one of the biggest spenders in the Championship since they won promotion last season. And that figure may be set to increase dramatically in the January window.

Who have Wrexham been linked with in the January window?
Although the club have yet to make any signings in the January transfer window, they have been linked with moves for a number of players that would cost a fair amount of money to sign. According to the Transfermarkt rumour mill, the Welsh outfit are considering moves for Hammarby right-back Hampus Skoglund, Wolves defender Pedro Lima, EA Guingamp defensive midfielder Kalidou Sidibé and Cruzeiro attacking talent Matheus Pereira. However, all four players have a combined market value of €22m, which certainly suggests that Wrexham may be prepared to splash the cash this month if called upon to improve upon a squad that are so close to a play-off spot. But it remains to be seen how much money the Welsh side will spend in January and how far that will extend their transfer market bill beyond their rivals in the Championship.
