Arsenal fans went through an emotional rollercoaster this Sunday. The Gunners had to win at relegation-battling West Ham to keep the Premier League title race solely in their own hands. In the end, they got the job done, but it came in dramatic circumstances. Mikel Arteta’s team took the lead through Leandro Trossard in the 83rd minute just moments after a fine David Raya save had prevented them from going behind. The Hammers then equalised in extra time, only for the goal to be disallowed by VAR five minutes later for a clear foul on the Arsenal goalkeeper.
Arsenal now need to beat relegated Burnley at home and Crystal Palace away to win their first Premier League title in 22 years. Arteta’s team also have a trip to Budapest to look forward to for the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain. They are essentially three wins away from their best ever season, and an enormous amount of credit must be given to Arteta and his team if they can get over the line. They have now won a club-record 43 matches across all competitions, but where does that rank among the most wins ever for a Premier League team in a single season? Let’s find out.
Most wins in a season by a Premier League team
Arsenal still remain someway off the record which was set by Manchester City in the 2018/19 season, in which Pep Guardiola’s team won an incredible 52 matches from the 61 games they played. They won the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup and got to the quarter-finals of the Champions League that season. In second place are Liverpool in the 2021/22 season. In the end, they missed out on the Premier League by a point and lost the Champions League final, but did win the FA Cup and EFL Cup and racked up 49 wins across the season. Guardiola’s Man City then take third and fourth having won 47 matches in the 2020/21 season and 46 games in the 2017/18 ‘Centurions’ campaign.
Manchester United recorded their most ever wins in a single campaign in the 2008/09 season, where they won 46 matches – that takes fifth spot. Guardiola’s Man City return again in sixth and seventh, after 44 wins in each of the treble winning 2022/23 season and the 2023/24 campaign. Liverpool managed 43 wins in the 2019/20 season when they won their first ever Premier League title under Jürgen Klopp.

Arsenal then rank ninth on the list with 43 wins from the 60 matches they have played this season. If they now go on to beat Burnley and Palace they will be sixth, and then should the Gunners also beat PSG they would go to joint fourth. Chelsea complete the top 10, having won a club-record 42 games in the 2004/05 season under José Mourinho. Nothing is won yet, but Arsenal are on the verge of making club history and completing one of the most successful seasons ever seen in Premier League football.
