Serie A was the most thrilling top five league five league this season with Napoli edging Inter Milan in an incredible title race. After finishing tenth in 2023/24, Antonio Conte transformed Gil Azzurri’s fortunes to spark unbelievable celebrations in Naples last weekend after clinching the Scudetto on the final day. Napoli edged out reigning champions Inter Milan by a solitary point but Simone Inzaghi’s men can still make it a memorable season in the Champions League final on Saturday.

It wasn’t just the title race that enthralled supporters with Roma enjoying an incredible transformation under legendary boss Claudio Ranieri to narrowly miss out on Champions League qualification. Atalanta and Juventus will join the top two in the Champions League next season, while Empoli, Venezie and Monza were relegated to Serie B. With the domestic season now over, Transfermarkt has announced its Serie A player of the season based on community votes and we’ve also detailed the award winners in each position.

Perhaps surprisingly, Yann Sommer has been voted Transfermarkt’s Serie A player of the season. The Inter Milan goalkeeper amassed 21.7% of the vote to pip Napoli’s Scott McTominay to the title – McTominay won the official Serie A award after leading the Naples side to the title. Three Inter Milan players complete the top five in Marcus Thuram, Alessandro Bastoni and Nicolò Barella.

Fans voted for their overall Serie A player of the year after deciding their winners in four positional categories: goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and attacker. Naturally, Sommer won the best goalkeeper award with 65.7% of the vote with Fiorentina’s David de Gea in second (19.9%). Bastoni won the best defender category (55.7%) ahead of Inter Milan teammate Federico Dimarco (30.8%) with Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo (5.6%) some way back in third.

Astonishingly, McTominay (30.7%) didn’t even win the best midfielder vote as that again went to an Inter player with Barella collecting (38.9%) the award. Despite scoring 25 league goals to finish top goalscorer, Mateo Retegui finished runner up in the best striker category with 21.4% of the vote with Inter’s Thuram – 14 league goals – winning the community vote.
